[C&C] New Class: Gladiator

Post by serleran »

I'm dropping all the fluffy flavor text, and just giving the ability breakdown, plus the advancement schema.

Versatile: Gladiators do not suffer non-proficient penalties when wielding a weapon for its intended use. However, when using a melee weapon as a thrown weapon, a gladiator gains a +3 bonus on the attack roll; normally, a character using a melee weapon as a thrown weapon suffers non-proficient penalties, so the gladiator effectively has a -2 penalty, rather than a -5. Versatile does not apply to weapons of alien concept or design, or those which the Castle Keeper deems too strange, such as firearms.

Weapon Specialization: At 4th level, and every four levels thereafter, a gladiator gains a +1 bonus to attack and damage when using a particular weapon type, such as long sword, mace, or net. Each time this ability is gained it must be applied to a different weapon.

Unarmed Combatant: Gladiators are trained to fight weaponless, gaining the Unarmed Attack ability of the Monk class. The gladiator's weapon specialization ability can be applied to unarmed attacks.

Optimize Armor: At 5th level, and every five levels thereafter, a gladiator gains a +1 armor class bonus; the gladiator must be wearing armor for this ability to be effective. This ability has no effect if a gladiator is encumbered. A gladiator cannot optimize an armor which he is not proficient in using.

Followers: At 9th level, a gladiator attracts loyal servants who seek to be trained. The majority of these followers are 0-level, though some may be 1st level fighters or gladiators. The number of attracted followers is based on the gladiator's Charisma score, allowing a total numer of levels equal to that score, with 0-level characters being considered 1/2 a point. The Castle Keeper determines the specific number, type, and race of all such followers.

Prime: Constitution
BtH: +1 / level as Fighter
HD: d10, +3 HP / level > 9th (as Fighter)
Weapons: All
Armor: Padded, Leather, Hide, Chainmail, Scale, Banded, Splint, All Shields
EPP: As ranger

It looks good, though I don't understand why the gladiator attracts followers at 9th level.

It comes from the Dark Sun setting. Both fighters and gladiators draw groups of warriors as followers at high levels. Fighters tend to draw more, to the point where they become armies, where gladiators draw smaller groups that would be the equivalent of special forces.

I like the specs you've got here for the gladiator class. I may just have to swipe them!

Like the assassian, I have a hard time fitting the gladiator into my campaign but, it does looks like a solid character class, nice work.
