[C&C] New Rogue Class Ability: Appraise

Post by serleran »

Appraise (Intelligence): Any item with a gold piece value higher than 100 gold pieces can have its worth assessed with this ability. The difficulty class is equal to the item's gold piece value, divided by 100, rounded down. For complex items, such a gem-encrusted crown, for example, it is best to appraise the component pieces rather than the whole item. The player does not roll this check. On a success, the CK informs the player of the item's worth, within 30%. On failure, the CK informs the player of the item's worth from 30% to 60%. In both cases, the assessment might be higher, or lower than actual value, at the CKs discretion. Special: A dwarf or gnome gains a +3 bonus on this check when appraising gems or jewelry; an elf or half-elf (elven heritage) gains a +3 bonus when using this ability on artwork or magic items. Additionally, upon careful examination, requiring at least an hour, of a forged document, the character can make a check modified by the forger's level or HD, to detect the counterfeit; this check, too, is made in secret.

I normally allowed this as one of the rogues "unwritten" abilities. The same with dwarves they just have racial ability to judge the value of gems, jewelry and weapons.(Just a ballparkm figure, not exact)

Yeah, I've typically done that too, but there are some that may want a systematic approach, so I tried to develop a means to it. It's not exact, but the nature of appraisal itself is not exact, in my opinion.
