[C&C] New Wizard Class Ability: Spell Specialization

Post by serleran »

Spell Specialization: Instead of gaining a new spell upon level advancement, a Wizard may opt to specialize in a single spell currently available, gaining a hefty advantage. The player may select any one of the following effects, to be applied:

1) The Wizard may memorize this spell one (1) additional time per day.

2) The range of the spell is increased by half.

3) The spell's duration is increased by half.

4) Area of effect is increased by base, or one (1) additional target.

5) The character automatically saves against the spell; if the spell does not allow a save, the character gains one anyway.

6) The spell's difficulty class is increased by two (2).

7) The spell inflicts +1 point of damage per die.

A character may only specialize in a number of spells equal to their Intelligence modifier.

I like this idea, it allows a bit of customization to a wizard, sort of signature spells.

One question could a wizard with an 18 int.(+3) take three of these and apply it to a single spell?

For example if he took all three on fireball and incresed the range, gave a -2 to saves, and added 1pt of damage per die.

As its written, no, that wouldn't be possible... but, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be, if the Wizard really wanted to do it. Actually, in that case, if I were the Wizard, I'd simply research a new spell. I've got rules for that, too.

I will turn this idea into a feat (I am implementing a system of "feats" in C&C):

Spell Specialization: Caster chooses one spell. He memorizes this spell one (1) additional time per day. He casts this spell as if he was one level higher (if he is a 5th level wizard, he casts this spell as if he were 6th level). He doesn't need his spellbook to prepare that spell.

I like this idea.

Whether it is balanced against the loss of an automatic spell/level would depend on the campaign, I think.

WoW!!! I VERY much like this idea.

Nothing seems unreasonably unbalanced about this ability. However, if a Wizard has access to learning new spells all the time, then this may unbalance the class a bit.

I shall use this ability immediatly. Great idea Serleran!
