Barrowmaze: A Classic Fantasy Megadungeon for Labyrinth Lord

Post by kilted.yaksman »

Greetings!

I'd like to announce BARROWMAZE a new classic fantasy megadungeon setting for Labyrinth Lord and related role-playing games.

You can find it at the link below in .pdf with both softcover and hardcover print available next week (week of the 20th). Barrowmaze is currently ranked 14th on rpgnow and rising!

http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php? ... rs_id=4249

I'm supporting it through http://www.barrowmaze.com with extras and freebies.

If you love old school D&D like I do, you won't be disappointed.

Please pass on the information to friends and fellow gamers across your blogs and networks. I'd really appreciate it.

Here's the info:

Local villagers whisper of a mysterious place deep in the marsh - a place shrouded in mist and dotted with barrow mounds, ruined columns, and standing stones. The tomb-robbers who explore beneath the mounds - or rather the few who return - tell tales of labyrinthine passages, magnificent grave goods, and terrifying creatures waiting in the dark. Are you brave (or foolish) enough to enter the Barrowmaze?

Barrowmaze is a classic old school megadungeon for use with Labyrinth LordTM and other fantasy role-playing games.

The Barrowmaze megadungeon setting includes:

1. An 84 page book describing Barrowmaze and The Barrow Mounds.

2. 300 encounter areas, traps, and puzzles to test the mettle of your players.

3. New magic items, spells, monsters, and classic blue maps.

4. Pregenerated characters and character sheets.

5. Over 25 new classic-style illustrations featuring artist Stefan Poag, as well as Toren Atkinson, Zhu Bajie, Trevor Hammond, John Larrey, and Jason Sholtis.

Barrowmaze will keep your players on their toes and your campaign going strong.

The .PDF can be yours for just $6.66 - that's right THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST!

Buy the print copy and the .PDF is just $2.00! [Print will be available next week]

Barrowmaze is brought to you by the Old School Renaissance (so don’t forget your 10’ pole).

I grabbed my copy , it's timing is convenient since I just happen to have a complex of barrows sitting waiting to consume a few adventurers, so this will slot right in to my campaign.

Just skimmed it so far, but it looks pretty good.

I just bought Barrowmaze a few weeks ago, and I'm planning to place it in my Greyhawk campaign, as being set in the area of the old Suel city of the Suss forest, in the Wild Coast, not too far from some small village. I like that it is fairly "generic", so that it's easy to replace Nergal with Nerull, Set with some other deity, such as Incabulos or Hextor, and so on. After a first cursory read I really liked the overall product, lots of fun ideas.

Also, a fairly tight and professional presentation. Very cool, better than what TSR was coming out with at the time...

What's the word on the print edition? I generally don't get PDF products but I'd like to get this in a printed copy.

Cool. I've been patiently waiting to buy the pdf/print combo but all the rave reviews have been testing my willpower to not just get the pdf by itself!

My 0,2€:

This is one of those products that does very well without a print version. I bought a ream of 100grs paper, slightly heavier and better, and just printed the whole thing on a laserprinter and have it on a binder. It's perfect, I leave one side free for notes et.al. during the game and I'm set. It's probably not cheaper than a print version, but works great.

I received a note just this afternoon that there was some type of error on their end when my electronic files were submitted to the printer. I'm told it should be rectified by tomorrow. All I can do is go by what they tell me.

I especially like the introduction, GM tips and other nuisances - knowing how the writer ran it really helps the reader. Also, the online henchman generator is awesome :)

BTW thanks for noting Meatshields!: The Classic Fantasy Hireling and Henchmen Generator. That was a lot of fun to create. All technical kudos go to cr0m. I'm just the content guy.

I am currently preparing to run Barrowmaze and reading the section on runic tablets left me with a question: is it possible to read a tablet more than once? If so, should I roll on the table each time it happens? For example, character A reads it, gets some kind of boon, so character B steps forward and also reads the table. For completeness' sake, say character C also reads the same tablet a session later, after which character A reads it again.

I would rule that the eldritch magic of the runic tablets works only once.

If anyone is interested, I am running Barrowmaze on Dragonfoot here (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... 81&t=55319) with the sign-up thread here (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... 44&t=55308). I am also running a Dungeon Crawl Classics version here (http://www.unseenservant.us/forum/viewt ... f=36&t=525).

These threads, especially as they continue, might be of use to anyone (1) considering purchasing Barrowmaze, (2) wanting to know how someone else is using the material, or (3) who wants to see the differences between Labyrinth Lord and Dungeon Crawl Classics.

I am very happy with my purchase of Barrowmaze, and I will certainly be getting Barrowmaze II!

Hi folks,

Just an update to say that I've had some custom dice created for the Barrowmaze II Indiegogo Campaign.

There are two custom d6s.

The one on the right is a custom Random Monster die. As you know you end up rolling for random monsters in Barrowmaze quite a bit, so this die has an armored skeleton head in place of the number 1 to signify a random encounter.

The one on the left is a custom Monster Initiative die with a symbol in place of the number 6. Woe to the players who see the dreaded wraith!

Please take a look at the campaign and consider pledging. Cheers. Greg

Re: BARROWMAZE: A Classic Fantasy Megadungeon for Labyrinth

On Wednesday we had our first session of my Barrowmaze Megadungeon Campaign. During the two forays, my two players (an Elf with a Strength score of 18 and a Half-Orc with an AC of 2; impressive, aint't it?) employed 4 men-at-arms (a halfling, an elf, and two former tomb-robbers) and 1 torchbearer, the latter one being the only NPC who survived both deadly expeditions (he was actually hired as a retainer, and sent into the local church to study religious stuff, eventually making him a 1st level Cleric). Their accumulated loot is worth 741gp total (plus a Potion of Clairvoyance), which I personally think makes the two forays quite successful.

Tonight another group is going to delve deep into Barrowmaze. Four players altogether, but not as experienced with old-school gaming as my two other players. I am really curious how much gold they are going to take and how many souls they are going to lose. Fate might be on tonight's group's side, as random dungeon restocking resulted in much secret treasure, and only one group of monsters.

As for the indiegogo campaign, these dice look awesome!

Oh, and a question - may I ask how the areas presented in BM2 will joint with the ones in BM1?

How about I play coy for fun: If you study the BM map closely you can make well-educated guesses regarding points of articulation between I and II. Is that what you mean? :)

I just received some fledgling WIP images of the custom Barrowmaze Character Sheet created by Zhue Bajie for the Barrowmaze II Indiegogo campaign.

They look great and should really add to the fun around the table.

Please come and check out the campaign, there's still 21 days left and lots of goodies and extras to be had.

Looking forward to Barrowmaze II. My players are looking forward to it as well. They are first time players of Labyrinth Lord-B/X D&D, and enjoying it. I have my good friend, his son, and his son's son playing. So it is a good old family game with people ranging from 9-40! They all are having a blast so good work Greg!

Thanks man. You just made my day! :)

Hearing that fathers and sons are playing Barrowmaze together brought a huge smile to my face :)

There's another family group playing with two daughters at http://www.thedelvers.com. They are good people.

Sadly, my kids are still too young but I get to live vicariously by reading session reports :)

I read that website occasionally. Alex, the 9 year old is having a blast despite his level 2 cleric dying last session. Bad rolls around the table led to half the party dying. He keeps asking when we get to play next, which is next week.

Excellent work Greg, we are all having a blast and he can share his own first time playing stories with Barrowmaze.
